GET TO KNOW ME

I’m Jayla, a Registered Psychologist based in Cochrane, AB.  I am passionate about mental health, well-being across the lifespan, and the field of psychology as a whole.

Since 2015, I have provided specialized therapeutic services to those dealing with challenging life experiences. I have worked in public and rural schools, not-for-profit organizations, and in private practice with a wide range of clients of all ages and with their own unique strengths and areas of need. I work with children, adolescents, and adults providing psychological assessment, consultation, and psycho-education. I have training and experience in the assessment of learning disorders, intellectual ability, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mood and anxiety disorders, language disorders, and other neurodevelopmental disorders (such as Autism Spectrum Disorder).

I also provide counselling support and have been effective in combining cognitive behavioural therapy, positive psychology, and mindfulness with a client-entered, solution focused, and engaging approach. I find it very important to balance both acceptance and change in the therapy process, so that clients feel understood, while also gaining the skills needed to make real shifts in their lives. I pride myself on being authentic and transparent throughout the therapy process, and value collaborating with individuals to determine goals and develop the necessary skills to help harness their capacity to overcome challenges.

I have worked with many mental health concerns, and am most experienced in working with: anxiety/panic, challenging behaviours, depression, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, family conflict, and self esteem. Additionally, my background and experience in Education has allowed me to build a unique perspective in supporting families. With my previous training and experience as a teacher and my knowledge of educational psychology, I am able to assist in providing consultation that supports you (and your child's school) in building an individual program plan (IPP) and/or developing effective strategies for the classroom. I am especially interested in working with youth and their families in order to support the development of confidence, awareness of healthy relationships, and boundary building.

I am warm, genuine, and passionate about helping people to flourish. I love learning from all of life's experiences, and am eager to explore and adventure. I grew up in Cochrane, and feel especially lucky to be able to work in my hometown. In my spare time, you can often find me with my family - having a campfire, playing by the water, or somewhere in the mountains. When I am at home, I am often spending time with friends or enjoying our pets - currently we have cats, dogs, and a snake. I love learning, music, and also enjoy baking and reading.
